Just admit it!

Often, when I approach someone about something they need to correct, the first thing I hear is some excuse or their "legitimate" reason why they are doing what they are doing which is not in accordance with established laws, guidelines, policies, rules, requests, or wishes. It's quite natural to defend ourselves, rationalize, or try to justify why we do something that we shouldn't do.

For example, when I approach someone about their reason for disturbing the peace, their reason is that it is once in while only; not admitting that whether once in a while or not, it is still out of line.

For example, when a policeman in the U.S. stops a speeding driver, it is quite common for the driver to give a very good "reason" why they were exceeding the speed limit; not accepting the fact that they broke the law.

For example, when a thief is caught, his justification is that he doesn't have and the other person does have, or that he's poor and the other person is rich; without acknowledging the fact that stealing of any sort is wrong

It's interesting to note that this has been going on since Adam and Eve. When God confronted Adam about eating the fruit, Adam did not admit his fault but rather tried to put the blame on Eve, making excuses. Cain also, after killing his brother Abel and when approached by God did not want to confess his sin to God but rather denied it.

We are all the same as humans. We do not want to admit our faults, failures, weaknesses, or sins. We want to be able to justify or explain our them away in order to make ourselves look right. Sadly, this is our natural condition, the result of being in a fallen state; because we are natural born sinners.

That is why coming to Christ is such an UNNATURAL act and is evidence of the Holy Spirit's work in us, because when we come to the Lord (for salvation or in our Christian walk) we must acknowledge our need of Him. We cannot come to Christ and say, "I know I'm a sinner but not that bad," or "I know I do bad things but really, I have a good heart and intentions," or "I know I have sinned but I was just trying to ..." and expect to be forgiven. That doesn't work. When we approach the Lord, it must be spiritually (in heart and mind) on our faces and our knees in total confession that we are GUILTY and without excuse. We cannot justify ourselves before Christ because before His perfect, righteous, holy standard we have NO defense.

Remember this though, God is infinite in mercy and very willing to forgive those who come to Him in HUMILITY. That's what CONFESSING our sins is, an act of humility. When we acknowledge our guilt, our faults, our weaknesses, our need we are saying to the Lord that:

We are WRONG but He is RIGHT
We are saying that we went AGAINST His way
That we are GUILTY but that God is JUST
That we are UNWORTHY but God is WORTHY

Therefore, God says, if we come to Him in humility He will give us grace, because He honors our confession of guilt to Him, but those who refuse to admit their guilt are proud and in danger of eternal condemnation:

James 4:6, 10

6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble ... 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

It is much better to acknowledge our failures because God is so willing to forgive us, if we would only confess them:

1John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Don't worry about how BAD you are, think of how MERCIFUL God is:

Ephesians 2:4

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us ...

Remember, Christ came for SINNERS not for those who make excuses (those who try to explain away their failures and sins in order to look right before God and men):

Luke 5:32

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

1Timothy 1:15

This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners ...

God bless this to you today.

Where no water is

OBSERVE: Where NO water is, there is dryness, desert, and drought
BUT where there IS water, there is greenness, growth, and gladness.

The Word of God is compared to water (Ephesians 5:26 ..."the washing of water by the word").

How are you doing spiritually? Dry? Unfruitful? There may be drought in your land.

Psalm 1:2-3 tells us exactly how NOT to be dry and barren:

"But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

Are you getting enough "water?"

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ..." (Colossians 3:16) and be fruitful.

Get in the Word. Go BEYOND "reading." Meditate on it throughout the day and night, look at life around you with "Bible glasses." Walk in its light. Consider the things of the world from a biblical perspective. Ask yourself what God says about your questions. This is taking water to your dry soul.

Message Men and Women

A blessing of marriage is maturation and growth further into the image of Christ (23, 24, 25, 29, 32). But it “ain’t easy!”

Message God Honors Mothers

Leviticus 19:3 Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

So often when we read similar texts, the father is named first. But, in this case perhaps the Lord placed the mother first to show her importance to the family unit. Clearly, from this passage, in putting the mother first, the Lord shows that mothers are important too.

Message Come Out From Among Them

God says, “come out from among them…”

Why? Because Jesus Christ came to redeem us from the world. Because our Heavenly Father is HOLY. Are we presenting the image of our Father in heaven (like Jesus Christ was), or are we presenting the image of the world, the lost, the devil?

Blessed is the man

Psalm 1:1 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."

There is a system of “threes” in this first verse of Psalm 1:

1. "walketh, standeth, sitteth"

walk = follow after
stand = to put yourself in the area of
sit = to be at ease and comfort with

The process: Walking leads to a place where we will sit.

2. "counsel, way, seat"

counsel = the philosophy of, the wisdom of, the advice of
way = the areas frequented by
seat = a congregation of

The process: Counsel directs us to a place where others of the same congregate.

3. "ungodly, sinners, scornful"

ungodly = those who do not know God, those without God
sinners = those who actively transgress (go beyond, "break") the laws of God
scornful = those who make a mock of sin

The process: Ungodliness leads to sin, and sin leads to making a mock at sin.

The idea: To start with walking in counsel that is ungodly leads to opening yourself up to outright sin, which in turn leads to feeling comfortable with it and where we eventually become numb to it and begin to laugh at it. Compare that with Proverbs 14:9 "Fools make a mock at sin ..."

Looking at Psalm 1:1 from these perspectives puts a brighter light on the words of God here:

4. "the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly"

The man who does not follow the advice, the wisdom, or the philosophy of those without God in this world.

How much of the wisdom of the world do we hear every day? Are we not continually exposed to horoscopes, palm reading, Oprah, Dr. Phil, and the like? Do we not hear the ungodly wisdom of this world in songs which tell us to "follow our hearts," to "fight," and to "rebel"? What do they know?! What do the ungodly know of God, His counsel, and His Son Jesus Christ? What REAL benefit can believers obtain from people who do not even know the fear of the Lord (Psalm 111:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom")?

The entire book of Proverbs is filled with wisdom. In fact, the WHOLE Bible is. And the New Testament describes the Ultimate Wisdom of God, Jesus Christ (1Corinthians 1:30 "... Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption"). But the counsel of those who know not God (ungodly) does not see this. Jesus Christ is only a “man,” a “good teacher,” a “prophet” and not God. This counsel tells people that Christ is only an historical figure to be put on the same plane as Muhammad, Buddah, Confucius, or Ghandi, with no inkling of His saving work.

Whereas the counsel of God based on reality and truth tells us that man is without hope in this world (Ephesians 2:12 “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world”) because of his sinful state (Psalm 51:5 “conceived in sin;” Romans 3:23 “all have sinned,” John 3:18 “condemned”). “But God who is rich in mercy (Ephesians 2:4), “sent His only begotten Son” (John 3:16), to “save us from our sins” (Isaiah 53:5). For God sent His Son into this world to save sinners: 1Timothy 1:15 “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” THIS is the counsel of God: Matthew 17:5 “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” And this is the counsel the ungodly CANNOT give; faulty counsel that directs people to sin and scorning God. Their counsel leads to death (Psalm 1:6 “the way of the ungodly shall perish”) but God’s to life.

5. "nor standeth in the way of sinners"

The man who does not put himself in the place where sin (mentally) and sinners (physically) are to be found.

When we start listening to the wisdom of those who know not God, we begin to find ourselves OPEN to the seeds of sin and the arousal of our innate sinful desires (Psalm 51:5) which eventually become so strong that we ACT on them (James 1:15 "...when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death"); Or perhaps we think "it's not so bad" going here or going there to places where we KNOW that are hotbeds of sin. This then is the beginning to the next level.

6. "nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful"

The man who does not hang out and feel at ease with those who laugh at sin as if it is a joke.

Just look around you. Sin is everywhere. Foul language has filtered down to prime time television; sex, sexual acts, and nudity has filtered down too. There is no shame anymore. In the movies, violence has become the norm, and computer games make "death" entertainment. People sit around in groups at bars speaking evil things and laughing about it, while the same corruption is found at "Starbuck's" as well. People mock sin as if it is nothing. It's all just a joke to the world and sadly to many Christians because they have not seen much "consequence" or much "judgment" from God.

But what their wisdom, their "counsel," referred to in the first part of the verse, did not tell them, was that we shall reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap"). And that God will one day bring ALL things into judgment: Isaiah 13:11 "And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible."

This then is the END result of the ungodly counsel, the sin, and the scorn: judgment (Psalm 1:6 "the way of the ungodly shall perish). Thus, If we reverse the psalm, it might say, "oh how grieved is the man who does not receive the wisdom of God."

7. BUT "Blessed is ..."

O how happy is that man!

Dear Christian, how much grief befalls us because we fail to listen to the Word of God? Because we fail to RECOGNIZE the counsel of ungodly? Because we fail to AVOID areas and thoughts that lead us to sin? Because we think LIGHTLY of sin. The wise man will stay as close to the LORD as he can through careful STUDY of His Word, good doctrine, fellowship, prayer, obedience, shunning sin, hating sin, avoiding sin. The “blessed” man “delights” in the Word of God. This then is the protection of this man AND the direction of this man which keeps him from the grievous end of the counsel of the ungodly, the way of the sinners, and the seat of the scornful. And this is the "blessed" man and the first step toward verse 3: “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper;” because his “delight” and “meditation” of the Word of God has kept him from it. Brother, sister, learn to recognize the flawed counsel of this world: Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom” and Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Say please, thank you, sir!

A simple "please" expresses humility on the part of the one who says it, as it is not a demand, but a "plea," a request.

A simple "thank you" is an expression of gratitude, and gratitude demonstrates appreciation or honors someone for their supplementation of your insufficiency.

A simple "sir" or "ma'am" expresses respect, a demonstration of humility to address someone with a title of authority which positions the one who says it in a lower position.

Put them all together, "please, thank you, sir," and we have humility, honor, and submissiveness to others which is an act of peacemaking between men and brethren (See: Proverbs 15:1; Matthew 5:9; Romans 14:19).

If we behave with "please," "thank you," and "Lord" toward God, we begin to see humility in action (James 4:10).

We don't need to seek for "great" or "visible" acts of humility to show you the world that we are spiritual

Just be courteous!

God forbid that I should boast

Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

God forbid that I should boast . . . What are you boasting in? What is it that you think will make you ACCEPTABLE to God? Sunday school teacher? Church worker? Faithful church member? Your church? Your denomination? Your multitude of good deeds? Other?

O no, dear friend, these things won't save you. Only a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ will: "Many will say to me [Christ] in that day, Lord, Lord ... then will I profess unto them, I never KNEW you ..." (Matthew 7:21-23, emphasis added).

O, may we be found in Christ NOT having our OWN righteousness ... "but that which is through the faith of CHRIST the righteousness which is of God by faith" (Philippians 3:9, emphasis added).

May we sing with truth the song of Isaac Watts, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" the second verse: "Forbid it Lord that I should boast, save in the death of Christ my God."

An Employee's Prayer

O Lord, please bless my place of employment with abundance, financial and numerical growth; enlarge her boarders, and establish her further in the market. For I thank you that you use this business to provide my, and my family's physical needs (food, clothing, shelter), because thou knowest I have need of these things (Matthew 6:32). Make me a blessing to my employer to this end, and be THOU glorified here by me and its members in answering this prayer. In Jesus' precious name - Amen.
